Facing the Competitive Exam

Okay, you have decided to take up one of the most competitive exams that could have a bearing on your future. The GMAT, TOEFL, IELTS, GATE, GRE, CAT . . . they all look larger-than-life to many and intimidating to quite a few! You have done your home work; still you are never sure what’s going to be in store for you in the “hour of crisis”. So, how do you get yourself to be at your best when you are at it? How do you make your nerves stay in their places and your heart beat at its pace?

Frame of Mind: It’s all in the mind. Realise that what you are doing is important but you can do it. You have faced different situations where you have used your intellect and skills to make your day. This is one more of them. This is yet another opportunity for you to prove to yourself that you can take it and make it too. Someone has to win it, why can’t it be you?

Looks and Poise: Your mind takes cues from your body. Just like it sweats when you are tense, your mind relaxes when you are physically “cool”. Dress up well, look groomed, walk tall in a relaxed stride and feel confident. You become what you feel!

Confidence: Confidence arises from the frame of mind. Even the best in trade sometimes feel let down and lost, when they do not feel confident; and when they are down and under, their opponents have a field day! It does not take the best to beat the odds – it only takes the confident to rule the roost.

Relax, do not cram: You had all the time to prepare for this moment. You have done your spade work. There isn’t much value addition that would happen at the eleventh hour, except that your mind would already be feeling the heat as you start your test. It’s more important to relax and take it easy than to cram as much as you can.
Stay alone: Buddies are for ever; but not when you are about to take one of the most crucial exams in life. It’s worth staying away from company now, especially from the more negative ones.

Failure is okay: The most successful have not thought much about results. They just play and enjoy the moment. They give their best and forget the rest. They know that not all matches can be won, but they put in the best that they can. That’s why they are successful!

You have got it in you. All that is needed is a way to bring it out and tell the world, what material you are made of. And the secret of success is very much in you!
